The Order and Medal for Distinguished Work in Mining and Geology (Albanian: Urdhri dhe Medalja “Për punë të shquar në miniera dhe gjeologji”) was a state decoration of the People’s Socialist Republic of Albania. It was awarded for distinguished service and achievements in the fields of mining, petroleum, metallurgy and geology. The decoration comprised comprised three classes of the order, along with a separate medal.
Criteria
The order and medal were awarded to workers in the petroleum, mining, metallurgy and geology industries, as well as employees of the Ministry of Industry and Mines, industrial enterprises, factories and geological research institutions. They could also be conferred collectively upon expeditions, brigades, work groups and other units.
Awards were made for particularly high achievements in production and geological exploration, distinguished contributions to organisation and management, participation in technical and scientific development, efficient use of machinery and the protection of what contemporary legislation described as socialist property.
The order was divided into three classes, First, Second and Third Class. The medal covered broadly the same field of recognition as the order and had similar award criteria.
Insignia
Order
The badge of the order is an irregular pentagonal decoration measuring approximately 36 mm across. The central element is a circular medallion surrounded by a raised border. Its design depicts a mining landscape dominated by an oil derrick, with two crossed hammers beneath it.
The First Class was gilt. Its central medallion was also gilt and surrounded by a darkened border. The reverse was plain and either flat or slightly concave. It was normally fastened directly to clothing by a horizontal pin, although examples with a vertical pin are also known. The order was manufactured in Albania.
The Second Class used the same general design and dimensions as the First Class but had a silver-coloured finish. Its ribbon bar was distinguished by two red stripes.
The Third Class was likewise of the same design but was manufactured from a reddish copper alloy. Its ribbon bar bore three red stripes. Two varieties of the order are known, distinguished by their reverses, one having a flat reverse and the other a concave reverse.
Medal
The medal is circular and measures approximately 32 mm in diameter, with an integral suspension loop. The obverse depicts, in profile, the head of a miner wearing a mining helmet with a lamp on the left, while an oil derrick appears on the right. The reverse is plain and smooth.
The medal is suspended from a small pentagonal suspension covered with a yellow silk ribbon bearing five narrow blue stripes. The corresponding ribbon bar uses the same colours and has five transverse blue stripes.
