The biggest NBA free agent on the board has made up his mind.

Twenty-two-time All-Star and four-time NBA champion LeBron James has agreed to a two-year, $8 million deal with the Philadelphia 76ers, Klutch Sports’ Rich Paul told ESPN’s Shams Charania on Friday.

In a statement, James said that while he thought he was going to retire at the end of the season, he feels he has “more to give” and that he “can help make the Philadelphia 76ers a championship team.”

According to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, “a source familiar with LeBron James’ thinking told ESPN that LeBron’s choice hinged on the pursuit of a championship. After weighing his options, he believes that Philly gives him the best chance of doing that.”

ESPN’s Shams Charania also reported there is a “real chance” James plays both years of his contract in Philadelphia.

The signing follows Philly’s acquisition of Jaylen Brown in a trade that was largely viewed as a huge win in transactional terms. Going from Paul George to Brown is an upgrade in the short term, and it didn’t come at a significant cost.

So much of the 76ers’ championship hopes rest on the health of Joel Embiid. He has played in fewer than 40 games for three straight seasons, and the 2026 playoffs told a familiar story as a hobbled Embiid couldn’t help his team avoid a second-round sweep.

With James and Brown now lining up alongside Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe, Philadelphia’s floor should at least be a lot higher. The Sixers will better weather Embiid’s absence in the regular season if he misses stretches of games, and they may not be totally doomed if he’s once again snakebitten in the postseason.

Maybe this will prove to be a case of having too many cooks in the kitchen. Embiid, Maxey, Brown and James will want the ball in their hands, while Edgecombe will need a healthy dose of looks himself in order to keep improving.

But this was an organization that looked to hit a dead end a few months ago. Suddenly, the 76ers are a serious contender in the Eastern Conference once again.

Hours away from the start of the free-agent negotiating window, James left everyone hanging when he made a big announcement about his next steps. Paul confirmed to Charania he wouldn’t return for a ninth season with the Los Angeles Lakers.

That left the issue of where he’d actually be signing.

The realistic pool of suitors was always going to be small, even when factoring in the sizable pay cut James would have to take from his $52.6 million salary in 2025-26. The four-time MVP wasn’t going to spend what’s left of his career on a rebuilding team.

That opened the door for a few different possibilities, though LeBron may have already charted his course well in advance. He has always been very deliberate with each decision across his legendary run.

The fact James still generates this much excitement illustrates how he impacts games.

At 41, he’s clearly a lesser player than he was five, 10 or 15 years ago. But he averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists last season, and he carried the Lakers sans Luka Dončić to a first-round series win over the Houston Rockets.

Signing with the 76ers is an acknowledgment by James that he can’t be a one-man show anymore. He needs a star-studded supporting cast around him if he wants a chance at a fifth title.

The timing also made it imperative for LeBron to align with what’s a mostly assembled squad.

When he changed teams in the past, James could afford to be a little patient. He’d settle in for a season, and the front office would have the chance to see what specific reinforcements were needed the following summer.

Now, LeBron’s playing status operates on a rolling basis. An organization can’t afford to waste a year with him on the roster because he might retire altogether after that.

The 76ers fully understand what’s at stake with this partnership. They’re not the automatic championship favorites in 2027, but anything short of a Finals trip is likely to be a disappointment.

For James, who reportedly doesn’t prefer to have a full farewell tour, he’ll want to conclude his career on a relative high assuming this is it.
