Andy Carroll is facing a possible jail sentence after the former England international was ‘charged with breaching a non-molestation order’, according to a report from The Sun.
The 36-year-old, who has played for Newcastle and Liverpool during his career, was arrested in April earlier this year. The alleged offence is said to have taken place a month before the forward was detained.
Carroll, who currently plays at non-league side Dagenham and Redbridge, is due to appear in court on Tuesday. Further details of the case cannot be revealed at this time.
Carroll Could Face Up to Five Years in Prison
The Sun released a report in July earlier this year stating that an unnamed former Premier League footballer had been arrested at an airport after flying into the UK. They have now confirmed that it was Carroll who was detained after travelling from France to Stanstead airport.
He has been arrested for breaching a non-molestation order, which is typically an injunction that seeks to prevent a person from going near another individual or address. Punishment for the offence can result in a possible jail term of up to five years.
Essex Police, issuing a statement to The Sun, stated on Sunday last week: “A man has been charged with breaching a non-molestation order. Andrew Carroll, 36, of Epping, was arrested on April 27 and the alleged offences relate to an incident in March. He is due to appear at Chelmsford magistrates’ court on December 30.”
In July, a source informed The Sun that many other passengers who saw the incident unfold were left in shock after they saw police questioning Carroll. He was then led away from the crowd, before later being released on bail.
They said: “You can imagine it was a huge surprise for other passengers at the airport when they saw him being spoken to by police officers at passport control.
“He had already been recognised by lots of people on the plane journey so it wasn’t as if he was keeping a low profile. He played for England and in the Premier League so he was attracting plenty of attention.
“It seemed as if an issue was flagged up to the Border Force officers at passport control at Stansted, which led to police being called. He was questioned for a while and then taken away by the police.
“It caused quite a kerfuffle as there were lots of other passengers around in the arrivals area of Stansted where he was arrested. Stansted is a very busy airport and he had travelled from a popular European destination on a budget airline.”
