Tabacaria is a poem written in 15 January 1928, by Álvaro de Campos, heteronym of Fernando Pessoa, first published in July 1933 in the magazine Presença.
The poem conveys a sense of the infinite, whose presence makes human beings as receptive to ideas as they are to facts.
The poem depicts the human condition, where the poet reveals the eternal conditions of being human – finite in certain aspects of their materiality “As a real thing on the outside” and infinite in its essence “As a real thing on the inside” – A monumental work which captures directly this sensation of eternity, present within an afternoon in which we “stay inside shirtless” – or even hear “the voice of God in a covered well”.
The Italian critic Antonio Tabucchi considers it the most important poem of the 20th century[1]
Since 1996, the cultural center Casa Fernando Pessoa publishes the semiannual magazine Tabacaria, in honor of Fernando Pessoa.[2]
