Messi, Ronaldo & Sir Alex All Agreed on Stadium With ‘Best Atmosphere’ in the World

Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Sir Alex Ferguson have all shared the same opinion about the stadium that produced the most electric atmosphere during their careers. The three icons of football achieved incredible success, smashing records and collecting trophies throughout their time in the game.

For more than a decade, Messi and Ronaldo’s rivalry dominated world football, with supporters still arguing over who is the greater player even after both left Europe in 2023. Messi, fresh from leading Argentina to World Cup glory in 2022, moved to the MLS to join Inter Miami, the club co-owned by David Beckham. Meanwhile, Portugal’s prolific scorer Ronaldo signed for Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia.

While both leagues are growing, they don’t carry the same status as European football. During their prime years, Messi and Ronaldo regularly delivered standout performances in the UEFA Champions League.

Ferguson also enjoyed remarkable European success with Manchester United. Yet the venue he believes has the most intense atmosphere is actually in Scotland. All three figures have praised the same stadium for its unforgettable noise and passion.

Messi, Ronaldo and Ferguson Stunned by Celtic Park

Ronaldo’s first Champions League triumph came in 2008 under Ferguson at Manchester United. In the final against Chelsea, he scored a header that helped guide the Red Devils to victory.

Earlier in that season’s group stage, United travelled to Celtic Park in November to face Celtic. The match ended in a 1–1 draw in front of nearly 59,000 fans at Parkhead, with Ronaldo assisting Ryan Giggs. The atmosphere left a lasting impression on the Portuguese star, who later spoke highly of the support.

“The Celtic fans are incredible. It is always great to play there.”

Despite his well-known connection to Rangers, Ferguson has also praised Celtic Park’s atmosphere. The Scottish manager once referenced Ronaldo’s comments while explaining how the club’s passionate supporters can inspire their team.

“Parkhead is the best I’ve experienced. The players were just talking about that the other day – Vidic and Ronaldo were saying it’s the best atmosphere they had ever played in. Credit to the supporters for that because they don’t half raise the roof. It’s obvious the Celtic players react to it given the results they’ve had. You are going to have to run that extra yard or you will soon be found out by them.”

Messi encountered Celtic six times during his time at Barcelona while winning four Champions League titles. One of those meetings produced a famous upset in 2012, when Celtic defeated Barcelona 2–1 at home.

Messi scored in Celtic’s famous 2012 win, but goals from Victor Wanyama and Tony Watt sealed the shock result for the Scottish side. The unforgettable atmosphere at Celtic Park may have played a role, something Messi himself later acknowledged.

“The games against Celtic were special and I want to remember them. Celtic Park is a tough place to go to. It’s never easy to get a result there… It is the best atmosphere in Europe and we all want to experience that again.”

Barcelona generally enjoyed success when visiting Glasgow during Messi’s era. The Spanish giants won 3–2 at Celtic Park in the 2004–05 Champions League knockout stage. Years later, Messi scored twice in a 2–0 victory during the group stage of the 2016–17 campaign.

Ronaldo Could have been Tempted by Celtic Move

    Cristiano Ronaldo

Ronaldo briefly became a free agent in late 2022 after mutually ending his contract with Manchester United. Although he initially seemed interested in remaining in Europe, he ultimately joined Al-Nassr.

At the time, broadcaster Piers Morgan claimed Ronaldo would even have considered joining Celtic or Rangers if a comparable financial offer had been available. Speaking to talkSPORT, he suggested the Portuguese forward would have been open to playing in Scotland under the right circumstances.

If the Scottish Premiership had the money that the Saudis do, would you have the same opinion if Ronaldo went to play there? Ronaldo would have gone anywhere that had Champions League football… He has most of the records in the Champions League and he wants to extend them, probably so that Messi can’t catch him and that he ends up as the GOAT of Champions League football.

Today, Ronaldo continues to score regularly in the Saudi Pro League with Al-Nassr. Meanwhile, Messi is now starring in MLS with Inter Miami, meaning his long-time rival’s Champions League scoring record is unlikely to be threatened.
