Manchester City are on the verge of being hit with a heavy punishment after being found guilty of breaking all charges related to serious breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules between 2009-2018.
The Citizens, who are currently top of the Premier League having won all seven of their matches to start the season, have appealed the verdict.
A huge punishment awaits them should their appeal prove to be unsuccessful. According to the Daily Mail, the Premier League are pushing to announce the sanctions before the outcome of City’s appeal, which will conclude on December 25 at the latest.
The commission is then expected to deliver a final outcome in mid-January. It is claimed that their most likely punishment is a ‘swingeing points deduction’ that would see them relegated, and then another big points deduction the following season which would keep them in the Championship. A large fine is also expected.
Premier League Team Accused of Breaking Even More Rules Than Manchester City
After Man City were found guilty of breaking the Premier League’s financial rules last month, talkSPORT presenter and former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan said they’ve been ‘the biggest cheats than have been caught.’
He has now claimed that Man City’s Premier League rivals, Chelsea, have broken even more rules than them. He has accused the Blues of cheating over a longer period of time and questioned why there isn’t as much outrage about their spending. Speaking on Piers Morgan’s Sports Uncensored, he said:
“If you believe in fairness and Man City’s team have been assembled in an unfair way, but the interesting thing for me is that if you introduce unjust rules – don’t be surprised when people behave unjustly.
“Why isn’t there real rage about Chelsea? Chelsea were allowed to do what Man City were never allowed to do and yet, six years after they were allowed into the room, they still cheated.
“So Chelsea got in the room, got to spend what they want, Man City come along and then people went ‘no, you can’t come in, we’re going to shut the door now.’
“But Chelsea were already in that room and five years later, they’re still cheating. So Chelsea actually are bigger offender and worse offenders than Man City. Because Man City weren’t ever allowed to be in the room and they’ve had to cheat to get in the room.
“So when you think about it in those terms, start getting some ire about Chelsea as well.”
In the summer, Chelsea were punished following an investigation into 74 alleged breaches of the English Football Association’s regulations.
The Blues were fined £10m and given a suspended ban from registering new players for two transfer windows for breaching rules relating to payments to agents between 2009 and 2022.
Chelsea have spent £3.89 billion in Premier League history, more than any other club. Man City have spent £3.27 billion in that time frame.
